TREK Iloilo #PharmatonPH #LifeChangers

Panay Bukidnon or Tumandok or Suludnon is the only culturally indigenous group of Visayan language-speakers in the Western Visayas. They are known for their epic chants, the longest in Asia; their Binanog Dance or “The Way of the Hawk," a ritual which mimics the flight of the mighty bird; and their detailed form of embroidery known as the Panubok. This is also the tribe of the "binukot", considered a princess among them who is chosen to live her life in seclusion.

On August 29, our group, TRails to Empower Kids or TREK will be reaching out to the Panay Bukidnon tribe of Calinog, Iloilo.

For almost eight years now, our group has been conducting outreach programs for the benefit of our little brothers and sisters in indigenous people (IP) communities. We have provided assistance to the Dumagats of Aurora; the Hanunuo Mangyans of Mindoro; the Kankanais of Benguet; the Ilongots of Quirino Province; the Kalinga people; the Aetas of Zambales and others.

TREK Iloilo will be our first time to conduct a mission outside Luzon

Our aim is to help the tribe preserve their culture through its three schools of living traditions (SLT) located in the mountains of Calinog, which are Masaroy SLT, GAMABA Learning Center and Agcalagan SLT.

Pro Earth Run 2015

“The future of humanity is everyone’s responsibility. This is why we never get tired of telling people that Earth Day must be everyday, everywhere, for everyone,” said Earth Day Network Philippines Chairman, Dr. Metodio Palaypay.

Palaypay underscored the critical role of media in bringing out the message of earth care to the public when he addressed the press and bloggers last 31 March 2015 at Merrell Concept Store, Market! Market! Bonifacio Global City in a media briefing for Pro Earth Run 2015. In the end, he entreated the members of the press, “Into your hands, I commit Mother Earth.”

Meanwhile, DENR Director for Strategic Communication and Initiatives Service Jesus Enrico Moises Salazar commended Earth Day Network Philippines for the environmental work it has been doing over the years. “While the result of your labor may not always be immediately felt, it will eventually yield something good for the country.”

It actively engages the participation of people from government, corporate, religious, and academic institutions to rally together behind environmental protection, preservation, and promotion.

Help Trails to Empower Kids, Help Others

Trails to Empower Kids or TREK is a group of mountaineers from different organizations joined together by one cause, to deliver aid where it is needed the most. TrailsToEmpowerKids.com

Students of Casiguran
Last 2008 TREK first Visited the Aeta of Casiguran but sadly all of the donation was lost due to a fire accident. And this coming December 10-11 , 2011 they are coming back to replace what have lost to continue the gift of sharing and giving. You simple donation will bring a great smile for the student of Sentrong Paaralan ng mga Agta in Casiguran, Aurora.

Click here for more photos of 2008 TREK

"Dear Sir/Mam:

For the past four years, the generosity of our colleagues, family and friends have allowed our group, Trails to Empower Kids or TREK to successfully hold outreach activities to children in far-flung areas.  We have delivered much needed-school supplies, books, reference materials, visual aids and even construction materials for comfort rooms and water system to schools located in the mountains of Itogon, Casiguran, Tanudan, Pudtol, Subic Town, San Luis, Kibungan and Dilasag.

As we celebrate our anniversary this December, we renew again our commitment to continuously help children who live in isolated areas and be an efficient channel of help for other like-minded individuals and group who want to help give these students better education.  We will commemorate this by revisiting the young agtas of Aurora, who study at the Sentrong Paaralan ng mga Agta located at Barangay Cozo, Casiguran, Aurora.  Last May, 2008, our group had the privilege of meeting these student and we were able to share with them donations including school supplies, generator set, television and DVD player.  On December 10, we will come back bringing some school supplies, clothing materials, food items and other items they may need.

Sentrong Paaralan ng mga Agta is about an hour hike from the barangay center, which is about 12 hours away from Manila.  The school does not use the same system we are used to due to limited resources, plus the fact that these students are not used to "formal" education.  The agtas are generally nomadic people.  We were able to bring them some useful materials last 2008 but most of them were either consumed or ravaged by a fire.

We appeal again for your generosity.  You can help us bring Christmas cheers to the young agtas by donating cash or other useful materials (school supplies, sporting equipment, food items, etc.), helping us with the transportation requirements of the project or by telling your friends about TREK.  For information, please log on to www.trailstoempowerkids.com.

Very truly yours,

Long Weekend for TREK Kasibu

PRESS RELEASE

It is time for another TREK project my friends. Some of you may not know it but for most of the communities we have served, only you have gone there to help. When you go to a TREK community project, most likely no other or very very few people have gone there to help but your group.

We have found another such isolated community in Atan a purok in Nueva Viscaya, which has seen no other mountaineering group, nor other NGO, according to their purok head. Like most untouched communities, each person we met greeted us with a smile and wishes for a good morning. The village has kept its basic values of hospitality, warmth, and curiosity. Without knowing us, they gave us their best room for us to sleep in, and even offered us their simple meal of sweet potato.

They strive to make their lives better. Nearly all the families send their children to school despite the Spartan classrooms and incomplete facilities; the school does not have electricity, decent restroom, nor running water. Such is their commitment that many students walk 2 hours each way to go to school on steep paths. Alas during “ber” months, when the rains come, attendance drops as the muddy terrain become difficult for the barefoot students to navigate.

Aside from the challenging distance, terrain, and weather, the students also have to contend with the dearth of textbooks, notebooks, pencils, and even slippers. The pursuit of education is difficult enough in many parts of the Philippines, but even more in distant tribes as in Atan Elementary School. Let us help them make their pursuit of education less challenging. Atan is remote, and it almost just you who can deliver help with a smiling face despite your aching bones.

Posted here is a list of their needs you may be able to help with. You can join us in delivering the goods on August 20-21, 2011. It is evident that they can expect no immediate help from any other group but yours.

"If not you then who? If not now, then when?" - Phillip Vera Cruz adding to Hillel 'the Elder'

ITINERARY

The meet-up place is at Caltex in Edsa corner Boni Ave.. Register by completing your payment and signing the waiver. Collect your shirt and ID.

On our stop at Bambang we can purchase supplies for your meals and have our breakfast there.  The climb is not difficult and no prior technical preparation is required. The slope is about 30 degrees almost throughout the whole trail. The path is wide and not heavily vegetated. There is also no tree cover so an umbrella will make your hike more comfortable. It is about 4 hours of relaxed pace including rests. If we are able to secure a 4x4 we can cut the travel time by about 3 hours.

We will sleep in the classrooms but if you are sensitive to noise and relatively cramped areas, there is a campsite with soft short-grass. Arrange your sleeping area such that your head is perpendicular to the long side of wall of the classroom to maximize space. Leave your footwear outside the classroom, but you opt to bring them in, put it in a plastic bag.

There is spring water on the trail and at the campsite.  When we get to the site secure your packs against rain and arrange your sleeping space.  After a short rest, you can eat your packed lunch and be ready to help out in the preparation which includes setting up banners and banderitas, preparing the party food, and unpacking the donations.

A program will then follow which includes games for the children and culminate in the distribution of the school supplies. Good vibes is mandatory. After the closing remarks, people can then relax further and just enjoy the area.

The next day, after breakfast, we head down to the falls which is on the way to the jump-off.  Please be mindful that the falls area can be slippery and dangerous. There is no place to clean up for the way home except by the falls. An area will be arranged to allow people to change to clean dry clothes in.

Happyland from Yabang Pinoy

Its advocates and volunteers are the young and idealistic Filipinos who spearheaded change in the mindsets of their countrymen. They want to convert “closet” Pinoys into Shouting Proud Pinoys, Filipinos who share the impassioned spirit and love for their country with fellow Filipinos and people from around the world. This change, they believe, will happen because they are starting it now.
We are the change we want to be.

What they do?

Yabang Pinoy understands that this progressive change is a gradual change: one day at a time, one Filipino at a time.
They are aware of their internal conflicts and discuss them among themselves to be aware of what they can do as part of nation-building. They develop fun, unique, and effective programs and activities for other Filipinos to catch the epidemic.

Yabang Pinoy's Session: YP 101 and "Happyland"!

Happyland is an inspiring film about the barefoot football players of Tondo. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Jim Libiran, Happyland is both an independent Filipino Film and an innovative social project. As a social project, Happyland aims to help popularize Football in the Philippines, while changing the lives of underprivileged athletes.

Happyland the movie tells the true story of the legendary barefoot football players of Tondo Manila. By learning a new sport they transcend poverty and realize their dream of achieving a better life.

Happyland is about friendship, hardwork, values , and inspiration.

The actors of the movie are real football players of Tondo, who trained under the Futbol sa Kalye program of Peter Amores.

This is a must-see film for every Filipino. Please invite YABANG PINOY to your schools! Let's spread the message of hope, inspiration, & resilience amidst adversity of the Philippines.
