Panay Bukidnon or Tumandok or Suludnon is the only culturally indigenous group of Visayan language-speakers in the Western Visayas. They are known for their epic chants, the longest in Asia; their Binanog Dance or “The Way of the Hawk," a ritual which mimics the flight of the mighty bird; and their detailed form of embroidery known as the Panubok. This is also the tribe of the "binukot", considered a princess among them who is chosen to live her life in seclusion.



On August 29, our group, TRails to Empower Kids or TREK will be reaching out to the Panay Bukidnon tribe of Calinog, Iloilo.




For almost eight years now, our group has been conducting outreach programs for the benefit of our little brothers and sisters in indigenous people (IP) communities. We have provided assistance to the Dumagats of Aurora; the Hanunuo Mangyans of Mindoro; the Kankanais of Benguet; the Ilongots of Quirino Province; the Kalinga people; the Aetas of Zambales and others.



TREK Iloilo will be our first time to conduct a mission outside Luzon



Our aim is to help the tribe preserve their culture through its three schools of living traditions (SLT) located in the mountains of Calinog, which are Masaroy SLT, GAMABA Learning Center and Agcalagan SLT.

Share a Story, Save the World: A Volunteers’ Meet-up

MANILA – Storytelling is an age-old tradition of the world. It has been practiced to pass on information, make sense of experiences, and understand one another. It has the power to immortalize individuals and events, incite ideas and action, and bring people together. It is in the spirit of this powerfully unifying practice that Hero Of D Day and CSR World bring to you Share a Story, Save the World: A Volunteers’ Meet-up.

On the 8th of November, Saturday, 6:00 PM, aspiring and seasoned volunteers from the youth sector will meet at Co.Lab, Brixton St., Brgy. Kapitolyo, Pasig City to tell their own tales and listen to others. Php 250 will avail participants of a Hero Of D Day kit, certificate, food, drinks, and an invaluable storytelling experience.

There will be an opportunity to share volunteer stories with fellow volunteers. Juana Change, an advocate of freedom, justice, good governance, and social change is slated to speak at the event. Geoanna Corneby, a Corporate Social Responsibility officer and an active volunteer for various NGOs that further youth development, empowerment of the poor, and nation building, will be conducting a writing workshop for the participants as a culminating activity as well.

Share a Story, Save the World: A Volunteers’ Meet-up is led by two groups one in the cause – Hero Of D Day and CSR World. Hero Of D Day is a social media organization that believes there is a hero in every one. Focusing the lens on the everyday hero, it recognizes great and small acts of heroism by collecting stories and publishing them online. CSR World is the youth department of Benita and Catalino Yap Foundation that ensures the knowledge and experience of young people on CSR 3.0 – Citizenship, Sustainability and Responsibility – are comprehensive and will enable them to be better citizens.

Both organizations focus on stories of volunteers and volunteerism and through this joint event, they aim to inspire participants to pursue their passion for helping others and live lives worth telling stories about.

TREK Celebrates its 5th Year with an outreach in the mountains of Kibungan

Trails to Empower Kids, a volunteer group, composed mostly of mountaineers who serve isolated communities in the mountains will celebrate its 5th Anniversary with an outreach program in Kibungan, Benguet.

Target beneficiaries are Polis Barrio School, Barangay Poblacion; Palina Elementary School, Barangay Palina; Tabbac Primary School, Barangay Palina; Legleg Barrio School, Barangay Palina; Napsong Barrio School, Barangay Madaymen; Lanipew Barrio School, Barangay Tacadang; Batangan Bario School, Barangay Tacadang; Les-eng Barrio School, Barangay Tacadang; Gasal Barrio School. Barangay Lubo; Lubo Elementary School, Barangay Lubo; Tonquey-Nalusbo Primary School, Barangay Madaymen and Ewa-Bokes Elementary School. Most of these schools are accessible only via hours of trek.

The group is now calling for volunteers who would join a small group of mountaineers who will traverse the mountains from November 30 to December 9, 2012.  Those with basic mountaineering training are preferred.  For those who are free only on weekdays, they are welcome to join the outreach from December 8-9, 2012.

There are also other ways to help make this project a memorable one for the children of Kibungan.
