PAGASA's warning via Google Public Alerts

After its launch on November 12, 2014, Google Public Alerts released today the first storm warning signal issued by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) due to the occurrence of Tropical Depression “Queenie”.

Google Public Alerts is a platform for disseminating emergency messages and everyday alerts using Google’s strength in information and technology aiming to provide the public with information it needs to make informed decisions during critical events such as severe weather disturbances.

Google Public Alerts work by incorporating public alert data from authoritative sources into Google Search, Google Maps, and other Google platforms and simplifying the process of finding emergency information. Contents come from partner countries such as USA, Australia and Canada. Google is able to provide Public Alerts in the Philippines through the information provided by PAGASA.

The PAGASA Technical Team worked on the project for six months and it is the fastest collaboration of Google amongst the nine (9) partner countries.

“We  expect that with  the  next  typhoon  that  would  come  in the  country, the  PAGASA Crisis Team in partnership  with Google  Crisis Response Team , will be  issuing  the first  Public  Alert in the  Philippines”, said  Dr. Landrico Dalida, Jr., PAGASA’s OIC for Operations and Services, during the launch.

True enough, Tropical Depression Queenie is the first featured weather disturbance in Google Public Alerts in the Philippines.

The general public can view detailed information about the storm such as the location, strength, movement and impact, as well as recommended actions and precautionary measures.

By providing readily-available online data, Google Public Alerts actually complements the existing information released by PAGASA thru its website and other social media accounts.

Share a Story, Save the World: A Volunteers’ Meet-up

MANILA – Storytelling is an age-old tradition of the world. It has been practiced to pass on information, make sense of experiences, and understand one another. It has the power to immortalize individuals and events, incite ideas and action, and bring people together. It is in the spirit of this powerfully unifying practice that Hero Of D Day and CSR World bring to you Share a Story, Save the World: A Volunteers’ Meet-up.

On the 8th of November, Saturday, 6:00 PM, aspiring and seasoned volunteers from the youth sector will meet at Co.Lab, Brixton St., Brgy. Aeternum Garden : Place on Earth like Heaven

Taguig City, Philippines ( October 18, 2014 ) - Aeternum is a Latin word which means Eternity. Located at the heart of Heritage Park Area 2 of Fort Bonifacio Taguig City, Aeternum Garden boasts its grandiose and inviting facilities such lush greenery, manmade lagoon and waterfalls, the viewing chapel where funeral services take place and the peaceful columbarium.

Jan Vincent Mercado, President of The Fort Park Estate Inc. who introduced the country's first True Garden Columbary, "Aeternum": The Park Estate Columbary discussed how they stumble upon the idea of putting up Aeternum Garden. He and his family received an offer before from the local city government to buy the property which then was just a piece of land. It was bought, developed and now became the country's first true garden columbary. "Living the life you want is very important but you need to live it well without harming other people." This is one of the inspiring lines from Vincent Mercado which people need to live by.

#LiveWellLeaveWell is the theme of the night where guests are encouraged to share something that they could not forget about their departed loved ones. Online media and VIP guests willingly participated in the "mini-sharing".

Chapel. Aeternum Garden has a viewing chapel inside the 5-hectare land of The Fort Park Estate Inc. Families, friends and other relatives may reminisce the happy memories they had with their loved ones inside the chapel peacefully and scenic praying areas of the park. The serenity inside and outside the chapel and the themed buildings will make you feel at ease for your treasured ones.

Cremation. Back to the pre-historic times, people from Rome, Italy called Etruscans give honour to their loved ones by cremating them believing that fire would purify their loved ones for eternity. After the cremation service, the matriarch of the family would gather the ashes of her loved one and place them in an urn and was kept in a sacred place - the columbarium.

Columbarium. Aeternum Garden which is a unique and floral-inspired structure symbolizes the love of the family to the departed ones. The garden setting is a sanctuary of memories and a haven of comfort for those who were left behind. At night, you will an amazing view of the columbarium as the lighting is randomly changing its colors. Classy. Flexible. Grandiose. Majestic. Serene. These are the words to describe Aeternum Garden. If you are wondering if the rates are too expensive, need not to worry as Aeternum offers its clients flexible payment options.

We all deserve a place on Earth like heaven. You live well. You leave well.

Quipper School for Filipino Teachers

As part of its “Back to School Campaign,” London-based education technology company, Quipper, challenged schools and teachers to use its online education platform, Quipper School, and fully utilize its numerous benefits. Pasay City High School emerged as the First Placer among schools in the secondary level nationwide, and was awarded with IT-based learning devices such as a Tablet PC and wi-fi hotspot. Quipper launched Quipper School earlier this year and is now used by 5,000 teachers all over the Philippines. Quipper School helps teachers and students connect through available technology and use it in providing education lessons and assignments in an environment where students can enjoy and learn. Teachers and school administrators who use Quipper School can take advantage of the vast amount of K-12-aligned content that can be used for lessons and assignments. Teachers could also track those who have not done their assignments via Quipper School’s teacher portal, and could also give timely reminders so that no one gets left behind. The Journey to IROC

As they all say, Rome was not built over eight. Same with our young Roboticts Athelete, many of the Champions in Robotics Competitions had to go through rigorous trainings prior to becoming the country representatives to an international Olympiad such as the IROC.

Step 1: Robotics Workshop

The first part of the exposure to Robotics happens during a Robotics Workshop or Camp. Data Science and Technology Corporation (DSTC) is the country’s leading provider of comprehensive Robotics Training Packages to schools. It is a special train- ing package offered to schools who are just starting to implement or introduce the con- cept of K12 Robotics Courses. As a beginner in Robotics education, the training package includes the following:

Robot Kits (no specific brands are required but highly recommended are INEX Robo Circle for young learners and INEX Pop-XT for moderate to advanced learners).

Robotics Environment (i.e. Sumo wrestling fields, Agribot Fields, etc.) – game boards where the programmed and assembled robots will be run and tested.

Robotics Camp Curriculum—the complete day-to-day lessons for the duration of the camp Robotics Trainers & Facilitators Installation of Robotics Software Applications Competition Management—the culminating activity at the end of the 3-day workshop.

During the school year, a typical Robotics Camp is usually held as a Saturday-program-offering of the school to a select group of students. Some schools would implement it as a Club or an Elective Subject. During Summer, Robotics Camps are more popular and offered by the schools as one of its Summer Class Programs.

Step 2: Robotics The Journey to IROC, Usually after a Robotics Camp, schools would realize that Robotics had a magical effect to their students …students who used to be afraid of Mathematics would start churning-out formulas as if they were part of their ordinary daily conversation. Many students would want to take-up advance classes in Robotics, and the rest would definitely want to continue working on a robot project.

As an excellent Hands-On laboratory for Science and Mathematics, schools are encouraged to integrate Robotics in their Science, Computer, and/or Mathematics Curriculum. Especially in Science and Mathematics, many difficult concepts are easy to unlock when taught using Robotics Demonstration.

Data Science and Technology Corporation offers packages that bundle Robot Kits, Teachers Training, S.T.E.M. Robotics Curriculum, and year long mentoring sup- port for schools.

A culminating activity can also be conducted at the end of the program where students would compete in a friendly competition and the possible candidates to an inter- school, regional, and National Robotics Competition are identified.

Step 3: Regional Robotics Competition

Data Science and Technology Corporation works together with Pinoy Robot Games to hold regional qualifying competitions all over the country. The winners from the various competitions are invited to participate in the National Robotics Competition.

Since this is a qualifying level and preparation for the schools’ participation at the National, same categories are used at the regional level.

Step 4: National TheRobotJourney to IROC ics Competition

The country’s first open robotics competition where the student skills take the center stage. There are various game categories where students can take part.

There are no robot brand requirements for the different gaming events, except for special INEX leagues.

Every year, there are more then 300 school teams that participate in this national event. The champions from the main game category will be the country’s repre- sentative to the International Robotics Olympiad.

The different Game Categories are the following:

1.Sumobot— match is fought between two teams, each team having 2 members. Only one team member may approach the ring. In accordance with the game rules each team competes on a Dohyo (sumo ring) with a robot that they have constructed themselves. The match starts at the judge’s command and continuous until a contestant earns two Yuhkoh points. The judge determines the win- ner of the match.

2. Line Tracing—the objective of Line Tracing is for your autonomous robot to com- plete the course in the shortest period of time while accurately tracking the line from START to FINISH. A game is played by one robot per team having 2 mem- bers. Only one team member may approach the playing field. Playing field consists of different obstacles with corresponding points. Your aim is to surpass the obstacle while moving on the line. The team who approach the finish line in the shortest period of time will win the game.

The Journey to IROC

Step 4: National Robotics Competition

3. Mission Challenge—these are games with required accurate movements and be-

havior of robot. The students are tasked to develop a program and build robots with precision. Example mission is the break-out challenge.

Break-Out: A natural disaster has occurred and the mission of the robot is to find or make a path to the trapped individuals. The trapped individuals are at the cell

marked END in the map. The robot will begin at the cell marked ST. The fast- est robot to get to the END wins.

4. Robo Soccer- this is a robot game that mimics human soccer. Participant will control humanoid robots to score more goals in opponent’s net. Understanding of hu- manoid’s mechanics and strategy is important and cooperation with teammates is re- quired.

5. Humanoid Challenge—this is a robot game that requires building and programming

a Humanoid Robot to behave according to the given task. One example gaming event for this category is Humanoid Prison Break. The objective of Robot Prison break is to build a robot that performs its best sensor usage by predicting the obstacles to understand a robot’s autonomous movements and study human brain function.

Step 4: National Robotics Competition

The 2015 National Robotics Competition will be held on February 7, 2015. The winners for this event will be the country’s representative to the 17th IROC to be held in Bucheon, South Korea.in December 2015.

Step 5: International Robotics Olympiad

The 16th International Robotics Olympiad will be held on Nov. 5-9, 2014 at Shi-jingshan Gymnasium, Beijing, China. The theme of this IROC is “Robots: Stop Global Warming!”

In the previous 15th IROC held in Denver Colorado last December 16-20, 2013 , the Philippine Team brought home many awards and recognitions. This is the first Robotics Team in the country that won GOLD Medals in a Regular Category.
