49th PHA Annual Convention & Scientific Meeting and Launching of "Sneakers Friday"

49th PHA Annual Convention & Scientific Meeting,
Launching of Sneakers Friday,“Sitting is the new smoking.”

The simplest guideline for all of us would have to be, “Sit less and move more, ”  according to close to 2,000-member Philippine Heart Association (PHA) and  the  husband and wife tandem of  fitness gurus,  Jim and Toni Saret.

Yes, there’s a direct relationship between time spent sitting and your risk of early mortality of any cause. As your total sitting time increases, so does your risk of an early death.

Sitting  for around eight hours a day at the workplace increases the risk of contracting heart disease, cancer and diabetes by 40 percent. Actually, it can cause killer legs, too.

Majority of the world population is in the working age-group. This group are always on the computer.  Glued on their seats for eight hours, they lead sedentary lifestyles, while facing different kinds of stress which leads to unhealthy eating (stress eating) and lifestyle. Most of them are unable to engage in appropriate physical activities for their physical and mental well-being. And in worse cases, some do not have the means to cope with stress and maintain mental health.

Eating healthy, exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding vices like alcohol and cigarettes are ways of preventing major lifestyle diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancers as well as other risk factors such as raise blood pressure, raise blood sugar level and  obesity. However, awareness and practices of these healthy benefits are still low among the working population

The Philippine Heart Association (PHA), a non-stock, non-profit organization of 1,780 Filipino cardiologists is committed to foster exceptional cardiovascular education and primary care for everyone. Living up to its mission, the PHA aims to do its share on the awareness on preventive and management of heart diseases. The initiative encourages employees to improve their physical and mental well-being, and effectively address sedentary lifestyles by launching a campaign called “Sneakers Friday.”

“Sneakers Friday” capitalizes on promoting physical activity. It is meant to promote workplace health and wellness where personnel are encouraged to wear sneakers, casual top and pants every Friday as a “dress down day.”

The PHA’s “Sneakers Friday” campaign builds on the perspective that individuals have the ability to adopt healthy lifestyles when supported by a conducive workplace environment that promotes “healthy eating, healthy habits and physical and mental fitness.”

In order to obtain a healthy lifestyle, it is important to incorporate wellness in all aspects of one’s life, including the workplace. Corporate wellness generates many positive outcomes for their employees as well as the company itself. Even a simple activity such as walking (or brisk walking, with100 steps per minute) has so many powerful health benefits. When done correctly and regularly, it can be the key to losing weight, lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, and boosting your memory as well as reducing your risk for developing heart disease, diabetes, cancer and more. Walking could be done effortlessly without interrupting corporate work. One can also choose to take the stairs rather than ride the elevator or when one parks the car, choose the farthest end so you’d have more time to walk.

The “Sneakers Friday” initial campaign got off the ground spearheaded by medical professionals and cardiovascular experts themselves in November of 2017 with the Makati Medical Center as its launching site, followed by The Medical City where every last weekday was officially declared as “Sneakers Friday.”

Last May 22, 2018, The “Sneakers Friday” campaign was officially launched. This ultimate goal of this campaign is to encourage the corporate sector to integrate more physical activity into their hectic pace and to make them aware that the corporate sector is the paragon of good health.

The benefits of incorporating a wellness program like “Sneakers Friday” in your workplace:

Aside from promoting a healthy lifestyle, it relieves employee stress, and it also promotes employee camaraderie. Setting time aside for employees to exercise can help reduce stress and overall sitting time. It also releases endorphins (happy hormones) and in the process creating happier and more energized employees. With a better mood and more energy comes more productivity!

Incorporating the Sneakers Friday campaign is great for promoting employee fitness and health. Partaking in physical fitness activities is proven to lower one’s chances of getting sick, which in return will ultimately lower health care costs for employees and the company. In addition, there’s an increase productivity as employees take fewer sick days too.

Employees get to know fellow employees outside of work. With a great group activity that allows co-workers to get to know each other better, employees will get the benefits of physical activity and the socialization that comes along with the group exercise.

With the “Sneakers Friday” campaign, coupled with healthy habits and lifestyle, the PHA looks forward to seeing happier and heart healthier Filipinos.

ONE Championship chairman sees Eduard Folayang as Philippines’ next global sports icon

If there is one athlete who put the Philippines on the map of the international sporting scene, it is Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao.
Pacquiao has captured 13 world titles in eight different weight classes and was hailed "Fighter of the Year" three times by both The Ring Magazine and the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA).
In addition, the BWAA body recognized Pacquiao with the "Fighter of the Decade" citation for the 2000s.
Aside from the world titles and awards, Pacquiao was long rated as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world by most sporting news and boxing websites.
From his professional debut in 1995 as a minimumweight competitor, Pacquiao rose up the scales to claim outstanding victories over the who’s who of the boxing industry, including Lehlohonolo Ledwaba, Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, Juan Manuel Marquez, David Diaz, Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto, Antonio Margarito and Timothy Bradley Jr.
Transitioning from boxing’s best kept secret to a global sporting figure, Pacquiao’s shocking eighth-round stoppage triumph over De La Hoya in December 2008 made him a crossover star and a media darling.
However, Pacquiao is in the final stretch of his illustrious 22-year prizefighting career and plans to call it a day in 2017 with a four-fight farewell tour.
As Pacquiao’s curtain call is looming, ONE Championship chairman Chatri Sityodtong sees Filipino mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Eduard Folayang as the perfect successor of the 38-year-old pugilist from the South Cotabato suburb of General Santos.
“My dream is to see a local star becoming a national star, and then he becomes a global superstar. I think that in Eduard Folayang, we have a big potential there,” he stated.
“With Manny Pacquiao retiring, he is going to leave a big void in the Philippines because he is a sports hero. I believe Eduard Folayang has all the right makings of becoming the next flag bearer of the Philippines on an international stage,” Sityodtong added.

From meager beginnings to magnanimous victories

According to Sityodtong, Pacquiao and Folayang have striking similarities as both men had tough beginnings with barely anything to start out with—from penniless homes to underprivileged surroundings.
In order to support their own families, Pacquiao and Folayang dabbled into sports, seeing it as their only escape from poverty.
Squeezing through the eye of a needle to survive, Pacquiao and Folayang conquered difficult odds and established themselves among the best and the brightest athletes of their respective sports.
Despite their successes in their individual fields, Pacquiao and Folayang remained humble as the two highly-decorated fighters preferred not to scowl and flaunt what they have achieved.
“Manny’s story inspires everybody. He evolved from a Manila street kid to a global superstar, but he remained so kind and humble. That’s what we saw in Eduard Folayang as well. Nothing has changed even if he is now a world champion. It’s just the same old Eduard as before,” Sityodtong justified.
Last November, Folayang pulled off an upset victory over Japanese legend Shinya Aoki to become an MMA world champion after nearly ten years of strutting his wares in the sport.
The 33-year-old Baguio City native dethroned Aoki by way of third-round technical knockout, driving a hard knee to the head before unleashing a barrage of punches to coerce referee Yuji Shimada to wave it off.
“In order to become a legend, you have to beat a legend. He did that despite being dominated by Shinya Aoki in the first round. Eduard Folayang showed what it’s like to conquer the odds,” Sityodtong said of Folayang’s stunning win over Aoki.
Sityodtong, who owns over 30 professional bouts as a Muay Thai practitioner, stressed that Folayang’s character exemplifies the true beauty of martial arts.
“I love him as a champion. He represents true martial arts values. He is humble and courageous. He is mentally strong. He has a warrior spirit. He’s always training and upgrading his skills. Today, he’s genuinely a well-rounded mixed martial artist,” he expressed.
“But most importantly as a human being, he really exemplifies everything that is wonderful about martial arts and Asia. He has the humility, kindness, strength, integrity, and courage. This is to me what Eduard Folayang is,” Sityodtong asserted.
Sityodtong is fully convinced that Folayang will be following the footsteps of Pacquiao as a worldwide sports icon.
“I really believe that he can become a global superstar in the same way that Manny Pacquiao is,” he quipped.
Folayang will be defending his ONE Lightweight World Championship belt for the first time against a yet-to-be-determined opponent in the main event of ONE Championship’s return to Manila, Philippines on 21 April.
“Eduard Folayang is going to defend his world title in his home country for the first time. I want the entire country, if you’re a Filipino or have a Pinoy heart, you’ve got to watch this fight,” Sityodtong invited.

Welcome 2017 with Philippine Standard Time (PhST)

Start the year right, synchronize or adjust our clock to Philippine Standard Time (PhST).

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) is mandated by law, as the government agency which is tasked to keep and disseminate the Philippine Standard Time (PhST). Section 6 of Batas Pambansa Blg. 8, defining the metric system in the country, states that: "PAGASA shall be responsible in the establishment, maintenance and operation of the National Standard for the second of time".

Another law is Presidential Decree 1149, assigning PAGASA as the official agency that will handle the dissemination of the Philippine Standard Time (PST). Recently, the Philippine Standard Time Act was created.  Later, its Implementing Rules and Regulations was also created.

Active Life Chicago PT

The Philippines has always been lagging in a lot of things. Fashion, infrastructure, and medicinal breakthrough. This is the main reason why a lot of rich people go abroad to have their pains and illness taken cared of. We don’t have the latest technology nor do we have an advanced know how on what really works and what doesn’t.

Dr. Ronald Samaniego realized this predicament and decided after over a decade of gaining experience and knowledge in Seattle that the Philippines is where he wants to practice what he has mastered when it comes to physical therapy. He is a doctor of physical therapy who have over 10 years of experience. He also went through one of the most painful things that can happen to your muscle which is an ACL and so he knows what it is like to be on the other side of the fence.

This is why Active Life Chicago PT was put up. Dr. Ronald Samaniego believes that even when you are going through physical therapy, one can maintain an active lifestyle. He encourages movement and not just letting your muscles rot. He also believes that with the right program, almost anyone can recover from pain and bring back muscles that may have atrophied.

Active Life Chicago PT currently has over 10 clinics all over the metro which makes them easy to access for commuters. It can be quite challenging for the regular people who simply commute when specialty clinics are located in areas that are hard to get to without a car. This is one of the considerations that Active Life Chicago PT kept in mind and so they put up clinics in Mandaluyong, Quezon Avenue, Caloocan, Alabang, Nuvali, Bulacan, Binondo, Fairview, Makati, BGC, Antipolo, Pasay-Buendia, and Pampanga.

The good news for HMO holders (Cocolife, Maxicare, Medicard, PhilCare and ValuCare (subject to insurance approval) is that Active Life Chicago PT accepts them. However, they need to abide by the rules and regulations of the specified HMO. Active Life does not use hot packs, TENS, or ultrasound therapy. These are traditional methods that do not bring out results. Active Life is all about results and they want to see it within 3 sessions. As such, they only accept stroke patients within 6 months of the stroke because the longer it takes, the more impossible it is to be treated.

Active Life is not a miracle worker. They simply apply the latest technology and listen to what the patients complain of. They have video proofs on their Facebook accounts, client testimonials, and paying celebrities who believe in them. For those who are experiencing pain, chronic or otherwise, call call (02) 997-5704 or (0977) 292 2215 for a location near you, and for cost inquiries.

Be Empowered with Affordable Computing

Mustard Seed brings affordable computing to the Philippines

Information technology infrastructure is one of the major problem encountered by many businesses in terms of complexity and affordability.  How can you make computing and IT affordable in the Philippines.

Mustard Seed Systems Corporation continue to expand its business solutions in the Philippines in order to help businesses grow.  NComputing is one of the company’s most popular product and had been initially deployed in public schools in the country.  It provided affordable computer labs in public schools decreasing the need for actual desktops while increasing the student-computer ratio.

NComputing this year launched its latest innovation, vSpace Server 8.3 and L350 Thin Client.  The latest innovation increases the already powerful and robust capacity of the patented and award winning vSpace Server that changes the economics of desktop virtualization.

How does NComputing provide affordable computing?

Let us visualize it.  A company with 100 employees who are technology based usually needs 100 workstations as well.  Each workstation needs a CPU, a monitor, keyboard and desktop among others.  This means 100 desktops with at least 300 watts power consumption and needs repair at least once every quarter.

NComputing reduces the number of desktops needed.  For the same setup above you just need 10 desktops which will act as server and 100 Ncomputing kits.  Each kit consumes only a maximum of 5 watts and does not go obsolete nor does it need the usual desktop maintenance.

By the example above you can clearly see that affordability comes by reducing your power consumption cost, maintenance cost and hardware cost while retaining the computing capability that is required from the usual company setup.

If you are interested to know more on how you can reduce your computing and information technology cost then visit our website at www.mseedsystems.com and contact us.  We will help you tap into the power of affordable computing.

You can also follow us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram – Mustard Seed Systems Corporation @mseedsys.
