PAGASA Astronomical Diary JANUARY 2014

Astronomical Diary
JANUARY 2014

Stars and Constellations

The famous equilateral triangle in the sky, known as the Winter Triangle rises after sunset. The Triangle is composed of Betelgeuse, the super giant red star and the prominent star of the famous constellation Orion (the Mighty Hunter), Sirius, the brightest star in the sky of the constellation Canis Major (the Big Dog), and Procyon, the brightest star of the constellation Canis Minor (the Little Dog) as shown in Figures 1 & 1a.

Meteor Shower

The annual Quadrantid meteor shower will be active from January 1 to January 7. The observation of its peak activity is on January 3-4 in which, meteors or “falling stars” can be seen at the rate of at least 40 meteors per hour. The shower will appear to radiate from the constellation of Bootes, as shown in Figures 2 & 2a. The Quadrantid meteor shower hits the Earth’s atmosphere at the rate of about 40 kilometers per second. The incinerated dust are said to be particles apparently derived from the debris ejected by the near-Earth asteroid 2003 EH.

Astrophotography Using PAGASA Telescopes and Camera

Figure 3 & 3a shows the Photograph of astronomical event using PAGASA equipment.

The Planets

On January 1, Venus will be shining at magnitude -3.7 and will be found low in the west southwestern horizon after sunset. It slips down the horizon as days pass by and it will no longer be available for observation after the first week of the month. The Planet will then appear in the morning sky at the last week of the month.

Mercury comes into view on mid-January at the west southwestern horizon. It will be shining at magnitude -1.0 and will have full disk (span of 5 seconds of an arc in diameter) as seen through a telescope.

Neptune and Uranus will be found above the west southwestern sky after sunset and can be observed with the aid of modest-sized telescopes and binoculars under clear skies with the aid of a star map. They will be located among the background stars of the constellations Aquarius, the Water-Bearer and Pisces, the Fish, glowing at magnitudes +5.8 and +7.9, respectively.

Jupiter will dazzle at magnitude -2.7 in the eastern sky after sunset and will be visible in the evening sky throughout the month. It will be found among the background stars of the constellation Gemini, the Twin. This month will provide a perfect opportunity to view the largest planet in the solar system with its alternating series of bright zones and dark belts and with a diameter disk that measure at 47 seconds of an arc.

Saturn rises in the early morning hours during the month. It will be glowing at magnitude +0.6 and will be located within the stars of the constellation of Libra, the Scales. Through a telescope, it will measure at 16 arc of a second across its equator, while the ring spans at 37 and tilt at 22 degrees to our line of sight.

The Red Planet Mars will rise before midnight during the month of January. It will be found among the stars of the constellation of Virgo, the Maiden. By the end of the month, the planets apparent diameter will reach 9 arc of a second through a modest-sized telescope.

Countdown to 2014: Juan Time: Pinoy Ako, On-Time Ako!

MANILA, Dec. 31 -- The country’s network giants are set to synchronize their timepieces with the official Philippine Standard Time (PhST) in greeting the New Year after consultations with officials from the Department of Science and Technology led by Secretary Mario G. Montejo.

President Benigno Aquino III signed into law Republic Act 10535 or the Philippine Standard Time Act of 2013 requiring all national and local government offices as well as broadcasting organizations to display PhST as provided by the DOST’s Philippine Atmosperic, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration or PAGASA, the country’s official timekeeper.

The new law, with its recently-published Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR), also provides for the observance of the National Time Consciousness Week, set to make its debut on New Year’s Day, January 1, 2014, with the theme “Juan Time: Pinoy Ako, On-Time Ako!”

“We urge Filipinos to synchronize their watches with PhST in welcoming New Year’s Day,” said DOST Secretary Mario G. Montejo.

“Our Juan Time campaign seeks to reverse the negative connotations of “Filipino Time” from tardiness to punctuality, discipline, and utmost regard for other people’s time. Lateness often leads to missed opportunities. What we want is for Filipinos to arrive on time as the new norm,”Montejo added.

For his part, DOST Assistant Secretary Raymund Liboro noted that the arrival of the New Year is the right moment for Filipinos to start following Philippine Standard Time. He added that the leading telecommunications service providers have already been synchronized with PhST.

"Smart is pleased to be an active partner of the ‘Juan Time’ Philippine Standard Time Campaign of DOST,” said Ramon Isberto, Head for Public Affairs of Smart Communications. “The theme ‘Pinoy Ako, On Time Ako’ is very appropriate in the context of keeping our diverse country of more than 7,000 islands in step with the world. Smart is committed to do its part in making sure that its 50 million subscribers will benefit from this Philippine Standard Time campaign," he added.

Ms. Yoly Crisanto, Corporate Communications Head of Globe Telecoms, echoes their support for the observance of the National Time Consciousness Week through the reach of its modernized network and social media. “With the implementation of the Philippine Standard Time, we are one with our countrymen in starting 2014 on time and observing thereafter Filipino Time as being always ‘On Time,’" she said in a statement.

I spend my days on the western shore,
where the sand is soft and the sun is warm,
oh Boracay is the island I adore,,,,,,

Yeah! Jet-Ski, Scuba Dive, Sun Bath,,,,, Oh come on and sail with me,,,,,

Star Karting At Starmall Alabang

Had a chance to try Karting last Saturday, January 19, 2013 at Starmall Alabang. Got lot of question running in my mind about Karting.

First, it was an eye catcher the Kart Racing helmet of Carlos Lorenzo place in the registration. We are asked to guess the Price of the Helmet?  My first guess was 8 thousand pesos but I was way off the actual price.

What are the Average weight of a normal non professional kart? Non professional kart have extra 50 kilogram because of the protection gear around the kart. So the total weight of the kart would be at least 140 - 150 kilograms. With this weight this small machine can accelerate up to 90 kph or more depending on the circuit design and condition.

How long do you think is the Indoor track of Star Karting on Starmall Alabang? The Star Karting circuit inside Starmall Alabang is roughly 350 meters with lots of challenging curves along the way.  Inside this circuit you can accelerate up to 30 kph. While the average record for one lap is 30 - 40 seconds.

Where can you find Star Karting? Star Karting is located on 3rd Floor Westgate, Starmall Alabang, Muntilupa City.

Star Karting was  formally the western exit which likely people are not much aware of the Star Karting opening . But surely you would find Star Karting it was just besided Starmall Sport Center.

Basic info about Karting is done now let's get it on but before the actual race we are required to sign a waiver because indoor karting in not your usual indoor activities.
Karting can be dangerous due to the speed and some accidental bumping/collision during the race.

We also have the basic lesson on different flags and its meaning during the race. Yellow means accident along the circuit/track take caution or slowdown. While the blue flag signifies that their a faster racer behind you and you must give way.
Lastly, the checker flag means start and end of the race and you must go back to the starting line !!!

Then  a circuit walk where we are given tips and advice where to slow down during a curve, the right position before the curve and lastly where to hit the gas in full throttle. All the briefing is over, game on.

The racing kart of Star Karting was well maintained and they have lot of kart.

All  participant was given a trial run to get the feel of the circuit and the kart. Then we are given a qualifying heat where you can have your best time. The best time would determine your position on the pre-final heat. See on the finish line !!!

After the non pro the City Kart Racing Team Pro will show us the right way !!!

City Kart Racing Team -- Carlos Lorenzo and Tai Alexander Zulberti.

Carlos Lorenzo and Tai Alexander Zulberti Demo

Top 7 fastest racer during the qualifying round !!! Ron of AutoReview, Jayson Biadog , Alvin Tan, Jeff Siy, Mr. Umali,Mico and Mr. Emata

 Star Karting Participants and Organizer

Actual time during the qualifying round !!!
What would be the fastest time of first placer during the event? Mr. Ron of Autoreview have the fastest time of almost 27.5 seconds while Jeremy and Corrine place second and third respectively.

The Star Karting Crew with Karlo and Tai !!!

Over all Karting is fun and challenging it's not race results it's the preparation that counts. Thank you Star Karting for this wonderful experience !!!
