Repost:
Our group, Trails to Empower Kids or TREK, embarks again on another mission.
This time we want to help Sitio Polis, Barangay Poblacion, Kibungan, Benguet.
Sitio Polis is home to the third largest cultural community in the mountain provinces of Northern Luzon, the Kankanais. The community, nestled on top of a hill surrounded by the mountains of Kibungan, can be reached via 4 hours trek from the municipal hall of Kibungan, Benguet. The jump-off point is four hour ride away from Baguio.
Last weekend (June 12-14, 2010), our group visited the community and we were deeply moved by the struggles of the students just to get an education. Some trek for more than two hours, some as young as 7 years old, on muddy path carrying their makeshift bags made out of sacks just to go to a school that also has scarce educational materials.
Our beneficiaries, Sitio Polis Elementary School and Sitio Polis Day Care Center serves five communities - Polis, Pakda, Ginawang, Liwan and Dacdacan (the remotest community, which is 2 hours away by foot). Sitio Polis Elementary School has 60 elementary students (grades 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6) and the day care center has 21 students.
We scheduled our outreach from August 21 to 23, 2010 and we are hoping to bring them their much needed educational materials plus other donations to ease the trek of the students like boots, raincoats and backpacks. We are also hoping to donate other materials like basketballs, typewriter, lamps, curtains, reference books, educational toys, first aid kit and hygiene kits for the students.
We rely on donations from kind individuals and companies to deliver much needed help to our beneficiaries. It is through our partners' generosity that we were able to help Sitio Saybuan in Itogon Benguet last December, 2007; Sentrong Paaralan ng mga Agta in Casiguran Aurora last May 2008; Lubo Elementary School and Tandudan High School in Kalinga last December 2008; Malibang Elementary School, Malibang Pre-school, Cacalaggan Primary School, Aurora Primary School, Flora Primary School and Lydia Primary Schools in Pudtol, Apayao last May 2009; Aeta Resettlement Site in Subic, Zambales last September 2009; the typhoon victims of Tanay, Rizal and Pangasinan; and Kalapnit Elementary School in San Luis, Aurora in December 2009.
Any amount will definitely go a long way to fill the hearts and minds of our little Kankanai brothers and sisters. We encourage cash donations so that there will be uniformity in the school materials we will provide our recipients.
